We had an all-day community cycle ride on Sunday 4th to Slapton Sands. It was a great day out, with about 20 of us meandering our way through the beautiful back lanes to Slapton in the sunshine, eating lunch down on the beach (thanks for the gorgeous cake OJ!). Well done to those for whom it was their first long-distance cycle ride, and well done all the more experienced cyclists in the group for being so encouraging and patient with us beginners! It was a round trip of about 29 miles, most of which was on peaceful back lanes awash with spring flowers.
Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun and relaxing day (despite some impressive hills), and thanks especially to Jim for masterminding the route, and also to Julian, who 'swept' and was so encouraging and supportive for those of us at the back. To see youtube footage of the ride click here .
We meet to cycle together both for long and shorter rides each month. On the first Sunday of the month we meet for a long day out cycling together. Our monthly meetings begin with a hour's local gentle cycle, which we finish off by going to the pub so we can chat over projects and plans that we have on the go. All welcome!
This webpage is only temporary, until we put together the real thing....
National Bike Week
Landscove Cycle Out
On Sunday 1st June, a small crowd of cyclists set out for Landscove. A day of sun and fluffy clouds along the cycle paths and back lanes, esp. the long-awaited new stretch of cycle-path at Huxham's Cross. Lots of chances to chat and listen to the skylarks while gazing at the placid swirls of the river at Staverton. We stopped for ice cream, cake and welcome drinks at the Garden House Cafe at Landscove and nattered for a good hour or so before heading back. Jim’s verdict: “…a fine day out! Very relaxing, good company... but who'd have thought you could spend most of the day just riding to Landscove and back?” For youtube footage of the ride click here.
14th June – first day of National Cycle Week
Bikes filled the workshop while owners looked intently at bits that didn't work. Bike Doctors Pete and Julian tinkered with gear cable tension whilst assistant Ben as kept tea & coffee flowing to encourage the swapping of experiences and comparing of bikes.
There was a brief breather around 12.30 and then it was wielding a 5mm Allen key in one hand and a sandwich in the other while doing a running commentary on the intricacies of Bowden cables and brake adjustment. “OK, I’ve shown you how to do the front brake, can you have a go at the back?”
Most people’s tyres needed lots more pressure – you get fewer punctures and the bike’s easier to ride. Many brakes were adjusted – vital for safety, and nobody found it difficult after looking carefully at how they work. Everyone went away with a smile and a handle on what they can easily do to keep their bike safe and easy to ride.
£50 was most generously contributed towards the group's kitty. A big Thank You to everyone who came and to the Doctors and their assistant!
Cycle Ride to the Whitehart Pub, Dartington
On a dark rainy Wednesday night a group of us peddled together along the river and up the cycle path for a drink at the pub, where we hung our macs out to dry and ate penny sweets. There were lots of new faces smiling and chatting away in the half-light, which is the great thing about the cycling group! You never know who you're going to meet , and each ride out has it's own flavour.
Cycling Group Market Stall
The Totnes Cycling Group had a stall at the market last Saturday, and got to meet with passersby to talk bikes, the group, about the community cycle rides we do (1st Sunday of the month 10am - The Plains, Totnes), and how through these we raise cycling confidence and the profile of cycling locally, exploring local cycle routes. People had fantastic ideas about what the group could be doing, and how they wanted to get involved. So watch this space!
Sunday (6th July) was also a great Cycle Out from Totnes to Tuckenhay - enjoed by many.
Coming Up.....
Typically things are getting a bit quiter over the holiday period.
The next cycling event that is happening is this weekend, when it is the Cycle Ride out to Berry Pomeroy Castle for tea at the fantastic tea shop at Castle! Sunday 2nd August.
It's going to be a gentle hour or so ride out there - going via Staverton and the beautiful back lanes - everybody welcome - little people and big....we never leave anyone behind, and do come, whatever your ability level - we always wait.
It's just a chance for us all to get out there en masse and feel safety in numbers, have our presence felt on the roads, and enjoy a day-out together.
It wil happen come rain or shine - so don't worry about us cancelling - we'll just get togged up and cycle about in it!
For info about the route call route-guru Jim on 01803 862369.
Thanks Jim for offering to do the route again! Hope to see you there!
Also TONIGHT (Wed 30th July) is the Transition Town Totnes Transport Group (which we are under the umbrella of) Meeting at the Guildhall. They are having a session imputting into the Energy Descent Action Pathways for how Totnes will be in 2030 and how we shalll get there with the project coordinator, Jacqi. It would be great to have a cycling imput into these ideas. So please do go along to the Guildhall at 7:30 for the meeting if you can make it.
