Background info for Food Group meeting

Food Group 3rd Nov   Background info

Community Food and Wellbeing Garden

This is an intiative which grew out of our public meetings held in early Summer last year. plans are well advanced to buy some land on the industrial estate near Leatside surgery and develop a food and wellbeing garden there.

 Energy Descent Pathways Project

We have been asked to work with Jacqui Hodgeson, the EDP Co-ordinator, to assist her in developing ‘Resilience Indicators’ in the area of food, as well as attending a futures scenarios workshop at the end of November. Rob Hopkins has sent a request for help

Food mapping Project

Jenny Gellatly, who helped us organise the CSA meeting in the Summer, has now been apppinted as regional co-ordinator of this exciting project mapping food webs around the country, and has identified Totnes town as one of their pilot areas. She is keen to make contact with volunteers able and willing to help her with this work between December and March. See attached paper for more information. Internet Food GuideRowena Rowena Moore in Forest Row who told me about ideas she has for transition towns connecting up with the bigbarn website,  The site is www.bigbarn.co.uk and it aims to link up local consumers and producers around the UK -  If you want to get in
touch with Rowena about it, (she's been chatting to the website
'owner') as follows:
Anthony from bigbarn who I have been in touch with was very keen to get involved with TT as he could see that it would offer him the local knowledge to really make his directory excellent – you are spot on about it needing to carry much more info to really be effective and a place that people actually ‘discover’ producers on their doorstep – I hope we will be able to at least load up basic details as we go along with our directory (we can do this for free).  The whole thing is chicken and egg – until it is excellent people won’t really use it but until people use it then producers won’t be wanting to sign up to it – it needs something to get it going in any locality. Would be delighted to chat further if you would like” – Rowena

If anyone would like to pursue this, they could contact her at rcmoore@btconnect.com., just let me know by e-mailing me as well I have contacted her and said that I would ask if there was anyone participating in the food group here that wanted to discuss the idea further with her. (Noni)

 Christmas Tree Project

Sue Holmes, who raised this idea with us, will be at the meeting to discuss in person, she has already gained the agreement of other members of TTT and is hoping to find out who is willing to participate from the food group. Here follows some info Sue sent us about the idea: "The Totnes branch of the Friends of Rowcroft Hospice is inviting 25 other groups within the town to join in decorating a tree (sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce) for the Chritmas Festival period, 1 - 25 December.  They would like the groups to decorate the tree in some way that reflects their interest, and raise money for their cause.  The money would be shared equally between the participating groups.

I would love to go back to Ann Rutherford, who is organising this, and say that Transition Town Totnes will decorate a tree - I can just see little bikes, bales of hay, nuts and edible decorations and so on.  I am happy to actually decorate the tree, and do one day's stewarding, but I would have to leave it to the more artistic/creative ones amongst us to actually make the decorations.  Although I will get my grandchildren involved too!"
