Totnes Summer Edible Garden Crawl
Submitted by TTTAdmin on 27 March 2008 - 1:46pm.
The Totnes Summer Edible Garden Crawl Fancy a day exploring lots of growers’ gardens? How do other people grow their broccoli? How does companion planting work? What of those slugs? What is that gorgeous plant and why is it planted there? Are you excited to have a nose in other peoples’ gardens and see what they’re up to? Transition Town Totnes, a community group looking to imagine and create a future that addresses the twin challenges of diminishing oil and gas supplies and climate change, are organising a Totnes Summer Edible Garden Crawl where 7 local gardeners in Totnes are throwing open their gardens for the afternoon to invite us all in to share tips, inspiration, and copious amounts of cake! It’s on Sunday 20th July starting at 2pm at the train station. We’ll be walking a route through some of the many gardens in the town, up via Collar Park to Follaton. Totnes is looking wonderful in its summer smock of flowers and leaves. Harvesting your own food fresh from your back door has never been so popular. For the first time in many years in the UK there have been more vegetable seeds sown than ornamentals. Oil prices are through the roof and taking the costs of food production with them. The growing, packaging and transporting of food round the globe may soon become a thing of the past and we need to rediscover some of the gardening skills of our forbears. As one of the growers taking part in the day said: I’ve been growing vegetables for a few years now, and each year I try something new and try to learn how a different plant is grown. Having a real connection and dependency upon the seasons and the environment has put me in touch with the world I live in in a way that my veg. box did not. When you grow your own you realise the effort, expertise and nurture that has gone into every meal that we eat. In our society we can be unconscious of the work behind our food. I love looking at my dinner and knowing that I did it. Don’t miss this exciting event. Meet at Totnes Train Station Sunday 20th July at 2pm. Free! Tea and Cake!
