TRESOC
The Totnes Renewable Energy Society is the body that is charged with owning and profitably running the Renewable Energy generating capacity of Totnes and environs.
Although it has come out of the Transition Towns project, TRESOC has been set up as a separate company from Transition Town Totnes as this was thought to be in the best interest of the community and the investors in the company.
TRESOC is born of the recognition of the urgent need to develop renewable energy on a sufficient scale to avert catastrophic climate change and to ameliorate the impacts of the growing imbalance between world energy supply and demandIt is not possible to achieve change on the scale required without some adverse impacts which must be weighed against the consequences of taking no, or insufficient, action.
Renewable Energy encompasses a wide range of technologies, each with its own particular attributes and impacts. The principal resources available for the purpose in Totnes and Environs are wind, biomass, including biomass in the waste stream, small scale hydrogeneration and solar. Technologies currently available to profitably harness these resources include wind turbines, anaerobic digestion, woodfuel heating, gasification and pyrolysis, hydro turbines, solar photovoltaics and solar heating.
This innovative cooperative Company will be devoted to the profitable local development of renewable energy for the benefit of Totnes and Environs*. The company structure is that of an industrial and provident society for the benefit of the Community, which allows for maximum public participation in its running.
